After many years of working with Summerset New Zealand, on the supply and installation of Balustrades, the newly formed Belcanto Group pitched an idea for a modular balcony system. The landmark Summerset development in Porirua, north of Wellington city centre, seemed ideal for this new, innovative approach to reproducing what is usually a complex part of any apartment project.
As with any new technology, someone has to be an early adopter. Working closely with the Summerset design team, external structural and façade engineers, we had to address and resolve some design complexities, mainly because the technology was unseen in New Zealand.
We showed how using our technology Summerset could reduce the overall project timeframes and provide cost savings while maintaining the traditional design intent of the concept. Which included keeping key features such as porcelain tile flooring and vertical balustrade finishes.
As part of the process, we also integrated additional components such as Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) services and column cladding systems into the overall balcony design.
Breaking up the design elements into manageable pieces and working with the required specialists to install these parts was crucial to achieving this goal.
Offsite production and assembling of the balconies cassettes meant when it came to installation, with some precise coordination from the principal contractor and specialist crane equipment, as a team, we made sure New Zealand’s first Grappler project started and finished on time, to budget and in one go.
